Apple iOS 5 is now available

The wait is finally over, Apple have released the final version of its next mobile operating system for their iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad line of devices. With what Apple claims to have over 200 updates over the previous version, the largest features, and perhaps most exciting are the new Notification Center that adds an Android esque notification system. iMessage, which can be seen as a direct competitor to RIMs Blackberry Messenger service, deep Twitter integration, over-the-air delta updates and my personal favorite; what Apple calls a PC Free experience which completely eliminates the need of a computer to set your iDevices up.

Unfortunately, the new and impressive voice recognition service Siri remains unique to the iPhone 4S only, which is a shame since its inclusion on other devices does not seem to be related to hardware limitations, just Apple trying to make the 4S stand out. Nonetheless, you can now connect your iDevice to iTunes and get your firmware download started.

Apple unveils the iPhone 4S

Apple today unveiled their latest iPhone at their 4 Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino. As its name suggests, the iPhone 4S is an upgrade of the current, highly successful iPhone 4. Externally, both devices are completely identical, on the inside however, the 4S features an upgraded camera, 8 megapixels capable of recording 1080p video, a dual-core 1GHz A5 processor with up to a 7x graphics performance increase (according to Apple), support for both GSM and CDMA networks, 14MB/s download speeds, the same 3.5" Retina Display and 1GB of RAM.

Software wise, the new iPhone comes pre-loaded with iOS 5, which comes with a bunch of new features including Twitter integration, a new notification system and a BBM-like service called iMessage to name a few. However the software highlight of the event came courtesy of the natural voice recognition capabilities of the device, known as Siri (sounds familiar?)

If you're looking to get your hands on the new device, it will be available for pre-order on the 7th of October in both black and white versions, and priced at $199 (16GB), $299 (32GB) and $399 for the 64GB model on 2-year carrier contracts.

Unreleased iPhone with 3 cameras pictured

It seems like an image of a 3D iPhone has been circulating, originating from a site named 175wan which we're never heard of up till now. The picture (above) is of a device that heavily resembles the current iPhone 4 but with a clear view of dual cameras and flash, and a second image (after the break) revealing a slightly thinner bezel around the supposed 4" display. There have been earlier rumors of a 3D iPhone floating around, nothing confirmed yet obviously as Apple never talk about unreleased products.

iPad HD comes in Q3 2011 with Retina Display?

According to ThisIsMyNext, Apple is preparing a new addition to the iPad family alongside the launch of a new iPhone in September this year. The iPad HD will not be the iPad 3 (supposedly still scheduled for the usual iPad first quarter refresh in 2012), this one is rather an upgrade to the iPad 2, so it wont be a complete redesign, the screen resolution however will be doubled, hence the "HD" in the name, to 2048x1536 making it a Retina Display in Apples terms. The processor will no doubt be upgraded in order to support the new resolution, so expect an A6 (or A5S?) processor, possibly still dual-core but with a faster clock speed.

iPhone 5 and iPad 3 components are being sent to the assembly/production line

Dual-core A6 processor, check. High-definition Retina displays, check. 8 megapixel 1080p back-lit cameras, check. NFC chips, check... DigiTimes has got news that Apple is assembling the list of iPhone 5 and iPad 3 components this month and sending them off to the production line. According to their source, the new iDevices should see the light of day in the September-October time frame, which breaks the fruit company's annual refresh cycle, notably the iPads, seeing the iPad 2 was only released a few months ago, so thats questionable. Nonetheless, will you be emptying your wallet on Apples shiny new toys?

Turn your iPad 3G into a phone, enable calling and texting via cellular network

Just last month, we reported on PhoneItiPad, an iPad tweak that lets 3G-capable iPads take full advantage of a connection to a cell network, allowing users to make and receive phone calls, as well as send and receive SMS. A few weeks later, the tweak is finally available to the general public, for $19.99.


Will this lead people to carry around iPads in their briefcases instead of iPhones in their pockets? Probably not, but it’s a proof of concept of how capable an 3G-capable iPad 2 is to interact with the outside world.

Etisalat confirms 4G LTE iPhone 5

Who-ho, a Dubai carrier that sells the iPhone may have just kissed good-bye its chances of doing business with Apple. According to GulfNews.com, the United Arab Emirate’s wireless operatoretisalat (yes, without capital “e”) has gone official today on a possible iPhone 5 launch. Here’s what their head of corporate communication said:

"Yes, we are in talks with most smartphone manufacturers including Apple on the rollout of the 4G handset, iPhone 5 later this year. As the first telecom organisation to roll out the 4G network, LTE, in the Middle East, we have already started talking to them for the handsets and chipsets in them.”

iOS 5 jailbroken within hours of release

Yes you read that right, MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has posted some pictures on his twitter account, confirming the jailbreak works fine on iOS 5, but of course it is limited to tethered boot only, which means you will have to connect it to your computer on every reboot.

Apple released iOS 5 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch yesterday at the WWDC conference in San Francisco. This new version of iOS brings over 200 new features, 10 among which are touted as key features, and includes: new revamped notifications system called ‘Notification Center’, Newsstand, Twitter integration, Safari Reader, Reading List, tabbed browsing for iPad, Reminders, Camera updates, Mail updates, built-in dictionary, PC-free (no cables required), OTA software updates, updates to Game Center, iMessage, AirPlay mirroring for iPad. Apple working on new display technology to increase user privacy

Don't you hate it when the guy next to you on the subway is looking over your shoulder, watching you screw up in Fruit Ninja? Well, Apple could have predicted your discomfort -- back in November 2009, before the iPad was anything more than a unicorn, the company applied for a patent on an LCD display with adjustable viewing angles, explicitly designed to "shield the display away from unintended viewers."

Fights break out at iPad 2 launch in China

Everyone wants an iPad 2, but seemingly not as much as some Chinese people who queued for the shiny new tablet in Beijing. The launch of the iPad 2 in China drew large numbers of people. Being the prepared bunch that the chinese are, the Apple retail staff had brought in a new procedure for the queues, involving numbered wristbands. Apparently, all hell broke loose in the Beijing Sanlitun Apple store causing it to close temporarily. Right now details are scarce, but it would appear that an Apple store employee had a ‘disagreement’ with some scalpers. Local newspapers are reporting that four people have been injured and taken to the hospital and one of the glass doors in the Apple store was broken while the mess was cleaned up. The police are investigating the incident with the possibility of charging some of the people involved.

CEOs of Google, Apple asked to testify at U.S. Senate hearing about mobile location tracking and privacy concerns

What do tech companies know about us and when do they know it?

CEOs of Google and Apple have been asked to testify at a U.S. Senate hearing on mobile technology and privacy concerns, amid reports that smart phones could be tracking users' locations.

The hearing, scheduled for May 10, was called as consumers worry that technology could be compromising their privacy and personal information.

Apple and Google are facing scrutiny from consumers and lawmakers concerning data that's being collected from mobile users and stored. Senators urged Google CEO Larry Page and Apple CEO Steve Jobs to testify, though there was no word yet if they would.

Its Official: The white iPhone 4 is almost here [UPDATE] Its here.

Apple today announced that the white iPhone 4 will be available beginning tomorrow. White iPhone 4 models will be available from Apple’s online store (www.apple.com), at Apple’s retail stores, AT&T and Verizon Wireless stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

“The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it’s beautiful,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we’ve worked to get every detail right.”

Is this the Apple iPhone 4S?

M.I.C. Gadget posts two images of what they are calling the “iPhone 4S.” Of course this name comes from our report about game developers preparing their next-generation iPhone applications on iPhone 4s with A5 processors. We didn’t hear anything about a larger display on the “iPhone 4S” so if the above image has any legitimacy, we’re going to call it the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5′s with larger displays have long been rumored with Digitimes saying 4 inches, the WSJ says edge-to-edge, and Joshua Topolsky saying 3.7 inches. A quick glance at the photo shows the new screen to be slightly taller and slightly wider. If the image is legitimate, it appears to be closer to 3.7 inches than 4 inches. Of note, the image features a white iPhone bezel with Apple’s new proximity sensor. We think it adds legitimacy to the photo if anything. See another image after the break.

Apple testing A5 dual-core iPhone on T-Mobiles network

That’s right, you’re looking at photos of an iPhone prototype with T-Mobile USA 3G bands. The actual internal model is N94, and if you remember, the Verizon model is N92 while the standard GSM variant is N90. We have verified that the phone itself is running a test version of Apple’s iOS, much like the one we saw in those videos from Vietnam, and it includes internal Apple test apps like Radar and Apple’s employee directory app. Additionally, the front of the white iPhone pictured looks a little different from the photos of the retail white iPhone 4 that surfaced recently — specifically, the proximity sensor has changed on the retail version.

Samsung files countersuit against Apple

Samsung responds to Apple's recent lawsuit with a countersuit claiming that the Cupertino-based company's iPhone and iPad infringe on 10 wireless technology patents.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung for allegedly copying its iOS products with the Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets. Samsung responded quickly with promises of a possible countersuit, and now the threat has been made good on.

The iPad 2 is now available online

Apple on Friday began accepting orders online for the iPad 2, and the first buyers were told to expect the tablet to ship within two to three weeks. 

While initial orders were said to ship in two to three days, that quickly was pushed back to a wait of up to a week. But as of later Friday morning, models of the iPad 2, in all capacities and colors, in both the Wi-Fi model and 3G options from AT&T and Verizon now ship in two to three weeks. Apple began taking orders at 1 a.m. Pacific, 4 a.m. Eastern.
